September 2023 Fishing Report

Our recent overnight trip to Chandeleur Island on the Southern Cross was a good indicator of what is to come this fall.  We have been dreaming of cooler weather and got our first taste of it since early spring.  We had steady school sized speckled trout action while drifting the beautiful grass beds on the inside of the Island.  Keeper size trout weren’t the majority of the action in this area but we did harvest the first evenings dinner from a quick morning session on Rudy’s Flats. Next years crop of fish is looking good!  The bigger fish were found South of Redfish Point in deeper water.  As to be expected with the Summer water temperatures still holding.  We caught the larger speckled trout wade fishing the southern half of Chandeleur. They didn’t come easily without the challenge of Sharks.  Never a dull moment out here! Good news is you can fish from the boat, as we ended up doing when the predators behavior alarmed our safety. Favorable light winds allowed us to make a run from home base, at Catch Em’ All Bar, to the Outside of the Island. There we could target Red Snapper over structure in open water.  When the season is open and the weather is right, this is an opportunity we always take advantage on our guided trip.  A limit of the Red boys and some bonus Mangrove snapper were iced down quickly after our landing on THE SPOT!  Didn’t see the likes of any curious Cobia this time but as the saying goes… “Shoulda been here yesterday!”.  All in all it was a very exciting, productive, and at times, RELAXING adventure on the Southern Cross.  Looking forward to the rest of our time out there this Fall!
